Building Successful Private-Public Partnerships
Date: Thursday, February 16, 2012
Time: 9:00-10:00am PST
For over a decade, private-public partnerships (PPPs) were the answer for corporations that wanted to “do business and do good”. By blending the efficiency of the private sector with the legitimacy of the public and not-for-profit sectors, impacts would be deeper, more sustainable and more scalable. But did corporations really understand the problem PPPs were supposed to solve? Did PPPs deliver the impact, sustainability and scale of reach corporations expected? Join Vital Wave Consulting to hear from a former Microsoft executive and 15 year veteran of PPPs, Matthew Clark, as he shares his thoughts on building successful PPPs.

Mobile Solutions for Women: India (event publications)
Date: Wednesday, December 21, 2011
Time: 9-10am PST
Women in India face enormous challenges with respect to health, education, and economic empowerment. Yet over 38% of the female population in India now owns a mobile handset. This increase in mobile phone ownership among women in India presents a hopeful, and potentially lucrative, opportunity to address the challenges that they face. On December 2, 2011 the Vodafone India Foundation, in partnership with the Digital Empowerment Foundation, hosted the WIN Awards - Women & Innovation for Mobile Awards - to celebrate and recognize the innovative mobile applications and solutions that are enabling empowered information and communication services delivery to women in India. Join us as Brendan Smith, Director of Consulting Services, shares the results of new research Vital Wave Consulting conducted in support of the WIN Awards for the Vodafone India Foundation. The presentation will review overall market sizing and the characterization of women's needs in each of the award categories of health, education and economic empowerment. It will also cover compelling examples of how mobiles are already being used to improve women's lives.

But what was the real problem PPPs were solving and are PPPs still the answer? If so, what are corporate best practices?

A National Framework for mHealth: Ethiopia (event publications)
Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT
Mobile health, or mHealth, remains a hot topic in emerging markets, for the global health community and the telecommunications industry alike. To date, however, most mHealth implementations have been limited to small-scale or pilot programs. Increasingly, stakeholders in both the public and private sectors are realizing the need for national frameworks that will allow mHealth solutions to scale successfully and improve the effectiveness of health delivery systems. Join us as we share the results of a new Vital Wave Consulting report, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, that looks at the potential for mHealth to improve maternal and child health in Ethiopia. This presentation will review the needs of the Ethiopian community health system, analyze the environment for mHealth in the Ethiopian context and suggest steps for introducing large-scale implementations within a broader digital health ecosystem.

A new form of capitalism is arising that recognizes our ability to direct the power and efficiency of market systems toward social impact, leading to a more balanced set of "returns". This social capital market is real and growing, and has real impact on emerging economies.
But does it impact ICT4D? How can technology companies leverage social capital for greater impact? And can NGO's and nonprofits that focus on technology also benefit from the flow of capital towards social good?
Join Kevin Jones, Co-Founder of the SoCap Conference and Good Capital, as he shares insights on the opportunities, challenges and prospects for social capital to advance technology interventions in the developing world.
Espresso and donuts will be provided. Please RSVP ASAP. Space is limited to 15 people, and then there will be a waitlist.
About the Technology Salon
The Technology Salon is an intimate, informal, and in person, discussion between information and communication technology experts and international development professionals, with a focus on both:
- technology's impact on donor-sponsored technical assistance delivery, and
- private enterprise driven economic development, facilitated by technology.
Meetings are lively conversations, not boring presentations. Attendance is capped at 15 people - and frank participation with ideas, opinions, and predictions is actively encouraged. It's also a great opportunity to meet others motivated to employ technology to solve vexing development problems.
Driving Development: mLabs
Date: Thursday, August 11, 2011
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT
With more than 5 billion subscribers worldwide, the mobile phone network is the world's largest distribution and communications platform. The fastest market growth in recent years has been in developing countries, creating a huge potential user base for innovative mobile applications and services. This market is largely untapped because low-cost, high-value applications that have a direct and immediate impact on the developing world are still hard to find. To respond to this development challenge, infoDev is working with the Government of Finland and Nokia to establish a series of mLabs around the world. The mLab network will ensure that locally relevant applications are created to meet growing demands among users in developing countries. Vital Wave Consulting, recently authored a business plan and companion planning workbook tool to support infoDev-supported mLabs, and other mobile application laboratory initiatives globally, to develop sustainable business models and transition from a donor-funded start-up phase to a self financing, sustainable phase over a three-year period. Join us as we review the global landscape of mobile application laboratories and discuss critical success factors for sustainable operation.
Scaling mServices: Souktel (event publications)
Date: Thursday, July 14, 2011
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT
Emerging markets are seeing an unprecedented growth in mServices, from mobile money transfer to SMS news updates. However, in the rush to leverage these market opportunities, for every mService success there appear to be a dozen failures—applications that fail to gain traction, or value-added services that lack staying power. Join us as we hear from Souktel, the Middle East's first mobile job information service, about the challenges and strategies related to its mService scale-up, since 2006, in one of the world's toughest business environments.
Fueling Economic Growth: ICT and Tourism (event publications)
Date: Thursday, June 16, 2011
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT
Tourism has increasingly become an important source of revenue in emerging markets, in Mexico alone it accounts for 13% of the country's GDP. Yet, in many developing-country markets providers chronically lack access to information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure to promote and scale unique regional offerings. Join us as we explore how the greater application of ICT, particularly the expansion of mobile networks and services, can strengthen the economic impact and growth of the tourism industry in emerging markets. This presentation will review data associated with this trend, key factors driving it and examine a case study that illustrates how national governments are poised to realize this opportunity.
